CSM, the commercial business behind Velo South, proposes to use the disgraced G4S as one of its four suppliers to police the event. G4S shot to prominence when it failed spectacularly to provide sufficient, trained staff for the London Olympics, causing the Army to step in and replace them, but this hasn’t prevented CSM from hiring them. It is not known what work the Council’s Safety Advisory Group or political leaders have done - if anything - to scrutinise CSM’s arrangements and satisfy themselves that they are safe, given the crucial role CSM has in planning and operating the event. Ultimate responsibility for the safety of residents and participants rests with West Sussex County Council. On past form, however, it is possible the Council and its officers are simply taking CSM’s word at face value.
